AMAZING BIRDING IN BOLIVIA
Day 1. Arrival at Santa Cruz de la Sierra and transfer to the hotel
Species: If time permits, we will spend a couple of hours birding around the airport, looking for species such as Chopi Blackbird, Orange-backed Troupial, Rufous Casiornis, Toco Toucan, Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, White-bellied Nothura, Red-winged Tinamou, Campo Flicker, Greater Rhea.
Day 2. Lomas de Arena and Santa Cruz Botanical Garden
Species:
Lomas de Arena Regional Park: Red-legged Seriema, White-eared Puffbird, Ringed Teal and other species.
Santa Cruz Botanical Garden: Bolivian Slaty Antshrike , Great Antshrike,Green-cheeked Parakeet, Fawn-breasted Wren, Blue-crowned Trogon, Amazonian Motmot, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Yellow-tufted and Golden-green Woodpeckers, Crowned Slaty Flycatcher, Suiriri Flycatcher, Purplish Jay, Creamy-bellied Thrush, Olivaceous Woodcreeper and Buff-throated Woodcreeper, Black-capped Antwren, Flavescent Warbler and Golden-crowned Warbler, GuiraTanager, Guira Cuckoo, Stripe-backed Antbird.
Days 3-4. Refugio Los Volcanes Lodge
Species:Two banded Warbler, Black-goggled and Blue-browed Tanagers, Dusky-green Oropendola, Plush-crested Jay, Purplish Jay, Green-cheeked Parakeet, Military Macaw, Blue-throated Piping Guan, Striated Antthrush, Slaty Gnateater, Ochre-cheeked Spinetail, Bolivian White-crowned Tapaculo (Scytalopus bolivianus), Red-necked Woodpecker, Yungas Dove, Sunbittern, Black-streaked, Puffbird, Yungas Manakin, Bolivian Recurvebill and Grey Tinamou. At night, we will try for Rufescent Screech Owl.
Day 5. Los Volcanes Lodge to Samaipata
Species:Andean Condor, Plush-crested Jay, Red-faced Guan, Sayaca Tanager, Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, Narrow-billed Woodcreeper, Sepia-capped Flycatcher and other species.
Day 6. Quirusillas forest to Comarapa
Species: Tucumán forest: Red-faced Guan, Tucuman Amazon and Dot-fronted Woodpecker and others.
Dry Valley: Blue-crowned Parakeet, Grey-crested Finch, White-fronted Woodpecker, White-tipped Plantcutter, Black-and-rufous Warbling Finch.
Day 7. Perereta for Red-fronted Macaw
Species: Perereta: Red-fronted Macaw , Cliff Parakeet, Bolivian Earthcreeper, Bolivian Blackbird, Chaco Puffbird, Black-capped Warbling Finch, Rufous-sided Warbling Finch, Striped Woodpecker,Spot-breasted Thornbird. On the way: Giant Antshrike, Yungas Guan, Andean Condor and other species.
Day 8. Siberia forest to Cochabamba
Species: Humid patch of montane forest above Comarapa: Azara’s (Buff-browed)Spinetail, Light-crowned Spinetail, Trilling Tapaculo, Rufous-faced Antpitta (endemic), Common Bush Tanager, Olive-crowned Crescentchest, Bolivian, Fulvous-headed and Whitebrowed Brushfinches, and Black-winged Parrot
Higher elevation: Black-throated Thistletail
Day 9. Birding the Cerro Tunari
Species: Cochabamba Mountain Finch, Bolivian Warbling Finch, Brown-capped Spinetail,Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Puna Tapaculo, Maquis Canastero, Cordilleran Canastero, Rusty-vented Canastero, Streak-fronted Thornbird, Blackhooded Sierra Finch, Greenish Yellow Finch, White-capped Dipper, Andean Condor, Blackchested Buzzard-Eagle, Grey-hooded Parakeet, Puna Tapaculo, Tufted Tit-Tyrant, Red-tailed Comet.
Day 10. Birding the upper Chapare
Species: Hooded Mountain Toucan, White-eared Solitaire, Orange-browed Hemispingus (uncommon), Straw-backed Tanager(rare), Yungas Pygmy Owl, Band-tailed Pigeon, Barred Antthrush, Bluebanded Toucanet, Grey-bellied Flowerpiercer, Scarlet-bellied Tanager, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, White-eared Conebill, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Barred Fruiteater, Southern Mountain Cacique.
Day 11. Birding the lower Chapare
Species: Yellow-rumped Antwren, Versicolored Barbet, Blue-banded Toucanet, Upland Antshrike, and other species.
Day 12. Flight to La Paz and birding at Lake Titicaca
Species: Titicaca Grebe, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Many-colored Rush Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Spot-winged Pigeon, Yellow-billed Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Duck, Puna Teal, Andean Gull, Chilean Flamingo, Plumbeous Rail, Andean Goose, Andean Lapwing, Cinereous Harrier.
Day 13. Berlepsch’s Canastero Today’s excursion
Species: Berlepsch’s Canastero(endemic) and other high-Andes species
Day 14. Birding La Cumbre and Coroico Road
Species:
La Cumbre(14,400 feet/4,000 meters): Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe and Grey-breasted Seedsnipe, Scribble-tailed Canastero and Diademed Tapaculo.
Coroico Road: Scimitar-winged Piha, Bandtailed Fruiteater, Rufous-capped Antshrike, Bolivian Tyrannulet, Mountain Wren, Fulvous Wren, Blue-winged Mountain Tanager, Andean Solitaire, Drab Hemispingus, and Orange browed Hemispingus.
Day 15. Coroico Road to La Paz
Species: Brown Tinamou, Upland Antshrike, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Stripe-chested Antwren, Torrent Duck and other species.
Day 16. Transfer to El Alto International Airport and departure (connect with your international flight home) or Blue-throated Macaw extension
